The Unintended Consequences of an Abundance of Urban Honeybees
A new study published in the journal Science of the Total Environment has revealed that the abundance of urban honeybees is having an adverse effect on the environment. The research team, led by Dr. Sarah S. Green of the University of Helsinki, found that urban honeybee colonies are having a significant impact on the pollen and nectar of wild plants. This includes a decrease in the diversity of pollinator-dependent plants, including flowers and trees, as well as a decrease in the amount of pollination services foraged by wild pollinators. The research team concluded that the presence of urban honeybees is leading to a decrease in the number of native pollinators, such as bumblebees, in urban areas. This can have a negative effect on the environment, as native pollinators are essential for the health and functioning of local ecosystems.
