Unprecedented Pathogen Storm of Vibrio Bacteria Infecting Sargassum Seaweed
The ocean is in trouble. On the surface, the threat is visible: a murky, brown tide of seaweed stretching along the shorelines of the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic Coast of the United States. It’s a phenomenon known as the “Sargassum Storm,” and it’s caused by an alarming number of Vibrio bacteria in the ocean. Vibrio bacteria are a type of pathogen, and when present in high levels, they can cause serious health risks for humans and marine life alike.
